Vancouver is home to many museums catering to different groups of people. How does one come up with identity which stands out while showcasing something as habitual as makeup? How does one show the historical significance of makeup, when it is used in our everyday life?

Objective

Create visual identity tools, logo and brand style guide for a new Makeup Museum in Vancouver. This would be only the second in the world and the only one in Canada. Visual assets have to be unique to make the museum stand out from other local museums.

Solution

The Musems’ visual identity is built around one of the historical styles of 20th century. It fuses a retro feeling with modern reality using well-known vintage elements.

Logo

Museums’ logo is a stylized lip shape icon, that showcases a staple makeup style of the roaring 20s - a flapper girl, sharp cupids’ bow lip in dark and bold colours.

Visual tools and Brand Guidelines

In addition to the logo, I created a spectrum of visual identity tools from print materials to uniforms and social media posts. All of those elements have been compiled into a brand comprehensive guidelines booklet.

Copywriting

While writing the copy for the brand guide I used the Museum’s communication guideline “Class meets sass” by using refined language with specks of witty humour and a bit of attitude.
